Five Wounds of Our Lord Parish Mass Schedule
The five piercing wounds that Jesus Christ sustained during his crucifixion are known as the Five Holy Wounds, also known as the Five Sacred Wounds or the Five Precious Wounds in Catholic tradition. Particular devotions have been centered on the wounds, particularly in the late Middle Ages, and church music and art frequently reflect them. Jesus sustained a number of wounds throughout his Passion, including those from the thorny crown and the scourging at the pillar. The five wounds linked with Christ’s crucifixion, including the lance wound that penetrated his side and the nail wounds on his wrists and feet, were the focus of medieval popular piety. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the resurgence of religious life, the ardor of Crusaders returning from the Holy Land, and Bernard of Clairvaux and Francis of Assisi’s ardent work all contributed to a growth in devotion to the Passion of Jesus Christ.
