San Sebastian Cathedral or simply Lipa Cathedral, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian in Lipa, has a long history of construction, devastation, and repair. According to the Lipa City Tourism Council, the Cathedral’s origins date back to April 30, 1605, when the Augustinians managed it as the “Convent of San Sebastian in Comintang.” The first structure was simply constructed of light materials. However, work on the Cathedral that is visible today began in 1779. After thereafter, it underwent a number of modifications and additions before being fully finished between 1865 and 1894, under the direction of Fray Benito Varas. According to the Lipa City Tourism Council, in the nineteenth century, the towns of Lipa, Taal, Batangas, Tanauan, and Bauan competed to become the new diocese’s seat. These townspeople were motivated by this to construct massive, ostentatious churches.
