Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto Parish

The first church was erected on the Sampaloc site in 1613 by the Franciscans under the direction of Father Blas de la Madre de Dios, the Provincial Father of the Philippine Franciscan mission. It was constituted into a parish that same year, along with the enshrinement of the Marian image of Our Lady of Loreto. The Poor Clare congregation, led by Mother Jeronima de la Asuncion, first resided in the convent established close to the church in 1621 before moving to Intramuros later that same year. Mary’s title alludes to the residence where she was born, raised, and visited by the angel Gabriel during the Annunciation. According to legend, the house was miraculously moved from Palestine to Loreto, Italy, in the 13th century.
